Couldn't finish this one. The plot was intriguing and I wanted to keep going, but the main character's personality really irked me. She's so unlikable; she's rude and horrible to people seemingly at random, unless they're attractive, THEN they get her instant trust and friendship. I couldn't get past the awful main character, so I skimmed a few pages to see if she actually started to get nicer or more cooperative. Nope. She did not. No, characters shouldn't be perfect and kind to everyone they meet, but they should have good reasons for being nasty. Case in point - and mild spoilers for the beginning of the book - the duo of dudes who are sent to "retrieve" her from her house. When they encounter each other under calmer circumstances later on, Sienna seems to instantly forgive the more attractive guy, while the descriptively unattractive guy continues to be a target for her ire. The hell is this nonsense? She thought both dudes were going to attack her at her house, yet only one of them gets forgiven? There's a massive difference between being a charming smartass and just being an outright... female dog.I don't write reviews often, but when a book really bothers me, I'm compelled to share why. This book might appeal to teenagers who can relate to that particular grating personality trait of Sienna's, but it and the rest of this series are not for me. I started reading this series because I have a free 3 month Kindle Unlimited membership and this is one of my favorite genres. I have now read 17 books in the series.First, the good. The story concept is great, and most of the stories are really good. The author is obviously very creative. Unfortunately, he is a terrible writer. Now, the bad. I would not have read past book 2 if I’d had to pay for any of the books. I kept reading hoping the writing would get better. It hasn’t. Mr. Crane is a terrible writer:- There are many, many typos/missing words throughout every single book. I write for a living and am familiar with how editing works. I can’t believe any editor worth their salt wouldn’t find all of these errors. Which tells me that either a) there is no editor or b) the author is making changes after the book has been through editing and is introducing more errors. Either of these explanations is mind-blowing to me for a published book. I kept thinking maybe the books would get better in this one regard, but they have not improved in 17 books.- The author is self-indulgent. Most of the annoying things other reviews have mentioned (Unlikable main character, etc.) are due to this. He uses every cliche in the book and you can tell that he thinks he is so clever. I seriously thought this guy must be a 50 year-old-man who has never been in a relationship. I was shocked to learn that he is married with children. Again, a good editor would have told him to change a lot of these cliches and the author obviously ignored this advice thinking that his cliches were good writing. Ugh.- The main character has grown up with very little contact with the outside world, including very limited TV viewing and yet he has her using tons of obscure references to movies (The kind every geeky guy uses) - this girl literally has had no time to even see all of the movies/shows he references, and the author references things HE likes and he is a 50-year-old man, while the character is an 18-year-old girl. These references are not consistent with this girl’s character, or really probably any female.- The main character is a female and the author has no clue about females. The first few books have almost no femaleness to the character and then a few books in, the author starts referring to her caring about her weight/curves. WTF? Of all the stupid things. It’s completely unrealistic to think that a physically badass girl like Sienna would think about her weight. She is literally fighting people constantly.- Along those same lines, in one of the books, a male character is deriding another male character by insinuating he’s a woman, and what he says is something along the lines of “if I squeeze your nipples, will milk come out?” Again, WTF? Does the author mean to insinuate that the guy is a nursing mother? Or does the author (a man with a wife and children) not understand that milk doesn’t just come out of women’s nipples unless they have had a baby and are nursing?- The author randomly uses vocabulary words that I’ve had to look up because I’ve never heard the word in my life. It’s like he’s using a thesaurus and picking the one synonym he’s never heard. Again, self-indulgent.- The author is constantly “jumping the shark”, which means when stories “reach a point at which far-fetched events are included merely for the sake of novelty, indicative of a decline in quality”. Except in this case, I think it’s laziness. Like instead of actually evolving characters into the next phase WITH Sienna, he just kills them off. It’s incredibly frustrating and keeps the story from evolving into something deeper and more satisfying.- As many others have mentioned, the main character isn’t very likable. The books and herself even say she’s not very likable, but you also get the feeling that author thinks she IS likable, “so THERE“. She is unlikable because she Constantly mouths off at people without provocation. It’s understandable that she would have issues with authority figures at first, but based on her experiences, this character should with evolve and mature, or become a total sociopath (which she is not). She (and the author) obviously think she’s funny, but it gets really tedious and makes reading the story more difficult. So, basically, Sienna is unlikable because the author is unlikable, which is sad.- Another ongoing element in the story that has become tiresome is Sienna and Reed’s constant bickering about her morals. Real-life people would have resolved this issue and put it to bed. Reed is an extremely stable character in all other ways, so this is not consistent with his character.Other comments:- I preferred the books that were completely from Sienna’s point of view. I don’t like that later books now have chapters from the bad guy’s point of view. Again, I think it keeps the story very shallow. In conclusion, I wouldn’t spend money on these books. I really wish the author would get and TAKE some writing advice from a good writer, because his story ideas are awesome, but the execution is at the level of writing and maturity of a 15-year-old boy.
